Why The National and The Bluffs Now Feel Like One Golf Community

Drive up National Drive in Parkville and you will pass two clubhouses less than a mile apart, each with its own parking lot, its own pro shop, and until recently, its own personality. For years, members treated The National and The Bluffs as separate worlds that happened to be close neighbors. This year, that stopped being true. A renovated dining room and a summer of junior golf matches at both clubhouses turned a loose federation of two golf courses into something that actually functions like one community.

If you already belong here, you likely noticed pieces of this without connecting them. The bar got bigger, and your kid's summer league schedule kept sending you to the other course. Here is what actually changed, and why it adds up to more than a list of amenities.

Two Clubhouses, One Membership

The National and The Bluffs were not always run this way. Invited Clubs, which describes itself as the world leader in private clubs, acquired both properties in 2021 from the Patterson and Illig families, who had built The National into one of the region's premier addresses. At the time, Invited's CEO framed the deal around bringing the two courses into a single, more connected membership, rather than leaving them as neighbors who rarely mixed. In 2024, the second course dropped its old name, The Deuce, and became The Bluffs, a rebrand that also came with a new pitch: Kansas City's most affordable private club, positioned as the accessible front door to an otherwise exclusive address.

That positioning matters if you live here, because it explains why the two clubhouses still feel different even though a single membership now moves freely between them. The National carries the competitive weight of Tom Watson's original design, the course longtime members say the Kansas City native has called the one he's proudest to have built. The Bluffs, also a Watson design, trades a bit of that intensity for a more relaxed, family-friendly clubhouse built around casual rounds and after-work beers rather than tournament pedigree.

The two-course, one-membership structure is the context for this year's changes. When you renovate a single restaurant, you improve one club. This year, the dining room renovation and junior golf schedule included activity at both clubhouses, giving members a chance to experience both locations.

The Grill That Finally Caught Up

Creekside Grill has always been the social center of The National, the room where a Tuesday round turns into a Thursday dinner reservation. This year it got a renovation that tripled the size of the bar and expanded the casual dining area, along with a new private space called Creekside Elevated Dining for members who want a more formal setting for a birthday or anniversary.

None of this reads as glamorous on paper, but the practical effect is real. A bigger bar and an expanded casual dining footprint mean the room that used to fill up fast on a Thursday night now has room for the after-work crowd and the family dinner crowd at the same time, which is a small but meaningful shift in how often members actually use the space rather than working around it.

A Summer of Junior Golf at Both Clubhouses

The PGA Jr. League calendar shows both clubhouses appearing in this year's junior golf schedule. The 2026 season paired two-player scramble teams for six play days and matches running from mid-June through early August, with matches taking place at both clubhouses.

The season opened with two Family Golf Days built for parents and kids to compete together, one at The Bluffs on June 7 and one at The National on June 14. From there, matches took place at both clubhouses.

  • June 21: Match 1 at The National
  • June 28: Match 2 at The Bluffs
  • July 12: Match 3 at The Bluffs
  • July 26: Match 4 at The National
  • August 2: Match 5 at The National
  • August 9: Match 6 at The Bluffs

Across the listed matches, the schedule sent participants to both clubhouses. It is one example of how members can experience both locations within the same season.

The Hole That Still Defines the Place

Even with the dining room renovation, the reason people talk about The National in the first place is still the ninth hole. The tee sits roughly 90 feet above the green, a drop that turns an ordinary approach shot into the kind of moment members bring up unprompted years later. Longtime members describe the tee box as perched on the edge of a bluff, with a lake guarding the right side of the fairway for anyone whose nerves get the better of their swing.

It is the kind of hole that explains why Watson, a designer with courses across the country to his name, is said to count this one among his favorites. The renovations happening around it this year did not touch the course itself. The dining and family programming described here are other parts of the club experience alongside the ninth hole. The ninth hole is still the reason the address matters.

What This Means If You Already Live Here

None of this changes the price of a home nearby or the calculus of joining. What it changes is the texture of an average week if you already belong. A bigger bar means Thursday night dinner reservations are easier to get. And a junior league schedule at both clubhouses gave participating families the chance to visit each location, blurring the line between The National and The Bluffs.
